Olympic icon Mary Lou Retton ‘fighting for her life,’ according to daughter

Olympic icon Mary Lou Retton is fighting for her life in the ICU, her daughter has revealed. McKenna Kelley asked for prayers and donations for her mother on Instagram, saying that Retton is battling a "very rare form of pneumonia" and is not able to breathe on her own.

Retton, 54, is one of the most beloved and decorated gymnasts in American history. She won five medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, including the gold medal in the all-around competition. She was the first American woman to win the all-around gold at an Olympics.

Her daughter's plea for help has sparked an outpouring of support from fans and fellow athletes alike. Many have taken to social media to share their prayers and well wishes for Retton.

"Mary Lou Retton is an American hero," tweeted Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles. "She inspired a generation of gymnasts, including myself. I'm praying for her and her family during this difficult time."

"Mary Lou is a fighter," tweeted Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas. "She's overcome so much in her life, and I know she'll overcome this too. We're all rooting for you, Mary Lou!"

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help Retton with her medical expenses. The page has already raised over $100,000 in less than 24 hours.

Retton's family has asked for privacy during this time, but they have expressed their gratitude for the support they have received from the public.

"We are so grateful for the love and support that everyone has shown our mom," Kelley wrote on Instagram. "We know that she is a fighter, and we will continue to keep everyone updated on her condition."

Our thoughts are with Mary Lou Retton and her family during this difficult time.
